Magnetic Separation & Magnetic Concentration Solutions from Eriez

Magnetic Separation, at its core, is the technique of separating ferrous materials from nonferrous and nonmetallic products. Magnetic separation is used to remove unwanted metal contaminants from products where these contaminants could cause harm or reduce product quality and purity, such as in applications like food processing, packaging, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. Typically, industries like these are highly regulated and require strict product purity standards. The stakes are high for brands in these industries, as unwanted metal contamination could cause a costly product recall and permanent damage to their brand.

The term “tramp metal” refers to any metal particle that is unwanted and must be removed from a product. In these applications, Eriez magnetic separators effectively attract and remove metal particles from bulk materials. Most tramp metal is ferrous, meaning that it is magnetically attractive. Ferrous metals could include different types of steel, iron, and mixed-metal alloys. However, nonferrous metals, such as stainless steel, aluminum, and titanium, can also become weakly magnetic (paramagnetic) and be attracted and removed with an industrial magnetic separator.

Alternatively, Magnetic Processing & Concentration focuses on separating and concentrating valuable metal particles from a material in applications where these metals have significant worth. Magnetic concentration is a common technique in the mining, metals recycling, and minerals processing industries. Here, the goal is to collect valuable metals for further processing, in most cases representing an opportunity to increase the sustainability and profitability of an application.

Eriez provides a robust range of engineered products and services for magnetic separation and magnetic processing and concentration applications. With more than 80 years of experience in magnetic technologies, Eriez is ready to discuss your application.

Integrating magnetic separation into industrial processing applications provides several benefits:

Removal of Metal Contaminants

Magnetic separators from Eriez are effective in removing “tramp metal”, which is any unwanted ferrous or even weakly magnetic nonferrous metal particles that may enter the product flow during processing. Common tramp metal examples include nuts, bolts, washers, hammers, needles, and even microscopic metal shavings or rust scaling.

Improves Product Quality

Many industries, including food processing and lithium processing, have very strict regulations that require metal contamination to be below a very minuscule level. Integrating magnetic separators can help ensure compliance with these regulations, preventing costly recalls, fines, or other legal issues.

Prevents Equipment Damage and Downtime

Tramp metal can damage downstream processing equipment. Crushers, grinders, mixers, and slicers can be damaged if the processed material contains metal. By removing these contaminants upstream, Eriez magnetic separators prevent costly equipment damage and the unprofitable downtime that is commonly associated with equipment repairs or replacement.
